What is the Mechathlon?

Competition

In order to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths at all stages, North Yorkshire Education Partnership, (NYBEP) in conjunction with The Young Engineers Clubs and with the help of the Advisory Services of North Yorkshire and the City of York, are holding a One Day Mechathlon (a mechanical pentathlon) in which teams of pupils can enter a Mechathlete (a mechanical athlete).

The Mechathlete will have to perform in up to 5 events such as weight lifting, sprinting, hill climbing, shot putting and long jumping. Points will be awarded for performance in each event which will total up to prizes.

The science, technology, Engineering and Maths required in designing and building a Mechathlete fits in with the National Curriculum and could be undertaken as part of class project work or it could be done during Young Engineers club meetings. The Science and Engineering Ambasidors have already been alerted to this event and are being encouraged to offer support to school teams designing a Mechathlete.

The Mechathlon event will take place on the 5th of July at the Engineering Inspirations Event at the Yorkshire Air Museum. Teams taking part in the event will be provided with a TEP Buggy and Rover kit valued at over £15, to help them build their final design.

Entry to the event is free, schools will only have to find travel and staff cover costs. Each school will be limited to an entry two teams and a team will consist of no more than 4 pupils from the same age group. Preference will be given to schools who send teams of boys and girls.

Teams presenting a design folder along with their Mechathlete could also be eligible for a Crest Award.
